Sodium is a very reactive element and therefore it is never found as the metal itself in nature. Therefore, i believe that in food products sodium may exist in combined state. Note, sodium ions are highly soluble in water. So in food, it will exist as sodium chloride or sodium nitrate or nitrite, etc
