what happens if i mix caustic soda with a sugar solution (made of coconut sugar and water). I read that caustic soda and sugar mixed together produces carbon monoxide – is that true? . Is it different if it is mixed in a sugar solution and not have harmful effects? Essentially i am trying to change the sugar structure and reboil it to make a new version of the sugar. I was thinking this process will invert the sugar and change its structure and maybe bring on a new taste. I am just concerned if using this chemical is safe and will the boiling of this sugar solution and added chemical be safe when everything is evaporated and only sugar is left?
If you mix caustic soda (sodium hydroxide) with a sugar solution, it will cause a chemical reaction called saponification. This reaction will break down the sugar molecules, resulting in the formation of a new compound called sodium saccharate and a byproduct called water. The mixture will also release heat and may become very hot. It is important to note that Caustic soda is a very corrosive chemical and should be handled with great care and protective gear.
